Lithemba Nziweni is a South African artist and photographer, primarily known for his conceptual photography. His work focuses on themes of identity, self-expression, and cultural heritage, often exploring how hair, particularly Black hair, acts as a symbol of personal and collective history. The Hairitage series gained recognition for its poignant reflection on the cultural significance of hair, examining how it functions as both a personal and political statement within the context of African identity.
Nziweni's art challenges societal norms and expectations surrounding beauty, while celebrating diversity and embracing self-expression. His work has been integrated into the curriculum at Rhodes University, where Hairitage is studied in the 'Photography of the Global South' module. Through his photography, Lithemba Nziweni elevates conversations about representation, tradition, and the modern-day experiences of people of African descent.
