GABRIELE JACOBS, A LEAN SEASON, 2024
"In my work I often explore the treacherous (and imaginary) boundaries between humans and the “natural” world. These paintings depict creatures that find homes in spaces humans have created. They can be seen as characters one might encounter on a walk in a park. The park is a significant site because while [seemingly] a natural environment, it is ultimately artificial." - Gabriele Jacobs
Gabriele is a multidisciplinary artist based in Cape Town. Jacobs often explores examples from nature which contradict the heteronormative lens through which contemporary society has been framed by western hegemony. The use of animal subjects to discuss queer identity posits a non-heterosexual lifestyle as a part of nature, rather than an anomaly. Between 2016 and 2022 they studied at the University of Cape Town, completing an MFA from Michaelis school of fine art.
